Embracing Diversity
To greet and meet one another with respect, …curiosity, and an openness to observe and share religious practices, to discuss our differences without making excuses for having differences; this is Diversity.
Everything in the world is diverse, whether its diversity in religion, gender, color, ecology, race, culture or belief. However, we continue to resist diversity; we continue to create barriers where there should be open doors.
In her address to the United Nations General Assembly in October of this year, Emma Watson addressed the issue of gender discrimination; she concluded with the fact that there is not ONE country in the world that practices gender equality - a barrier exists.
Embracing Diversity, the theme for this year’s annual conference, is a subject that MUST be addressed. Her majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah said “ It’s important for us to teach our children not to fear diversity; for them to know that it can be as simple as exchanging your sandwich with your friend at school”.
We are 7 billion people, living on 7 different continents in 196 different countries. 7 billion people equal 7 billion differences. Therefore, our reaction towards diversity should be to embrace it, not to demolish it.
What we have in common is more powerful than our differences; it is our deep unity amidst diversity.
Our aim in choosing this year’s theme, Embracing Diversity, is to address this resistance and lack of understanding. We MUST embrace diversity because; we are all pieces of one large puzzle which is the globe we share. In order to bring peace and stability to our globe we have to fit the pieces of the puzzle together to become one diversified unit.
